Most of this book was quite predictable, and quite unrealistic at times. It portrays cultural traditions that have been in place for millennia, and how they have been affected by the World Wars and the modern life we know today. This story describes much about South Indian culture that isn’t found in the media. She also finds solace in the library, where she reads whenever she can.

However, she meets someone who may just make her time at her father’s family’s home worthwhile. Vidya’s cousin Malathi and her Periamma(her aunt/her father’s brother’s wife) bully her to no end, and make fun of her endlessly. They expect Vidya’s family to work non-stop, and fall at their feet for taking Vidya’s family in.

Vidya’s family is forced to move into Vidya’s father’s family home, where a majority of his entire family is demanding and cruel. However, after getting stuck in a march for Indian rights, then being attacked by British officers, Vidya’s father is brutally beaten. Vidya is close with her brother Kitta, who is one of her best friends. Learning and working is where her aspirations lie, but she is hesitant about asking her family to go to college instead of getting married. Vidya, our main protagonist, wants to go to college more than anything in the world.
